IRS and identity theft

I completely agree with you. I had my identity stolen 3 years ago and someone used my name and SSN to receive a tax refund. My husband and I filed electronically with a CPA and sent our amount due by April 15th. Apparently the US Treasury holds onto your money but the taxes filed were kicked back to the CPA, we were unaware that the IRS and CPA were playing ping-pong with our filing because someone had already filed erroneously using my name and number, thus resulting in our joint filing getting rejected. This has resulted in approximately $60,000 in fines and the IRS seized my savings account. I walked into my IRS office in San Antonio, TX to follow-up on my situation and the front clerk, with and armed officer beside her, handed me paperwork with numbers to call the IRS. She refused to let me speak with anyone face-to-face. All of my calls for the past 3 months have been met with "due to an unusually high call volume we are unable to take your call" with instructions to call back at a later date...then disconnecting. The current system is not effective. My husband and I have been diligent for 23 years in our filings and contributions to paying our due taxes, but someone has taken my name, SSN, good standing, and the IRS has allowed this, punished me, and now refuses to deal with me. I feel beyond anger and helpless.

IRS screwed up my payment arrangment

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Now they are telling me i have to pay more to reinstate it, what a joke these clowns are. I filed a complaint with the Inspector General, let's see where this goes. Can't believe there are no checks and balances with these idiots. I have receipts for every payment. Made sure to keep them just in case for some weird reason i may need them in the future. well looks like the future is now. Going to the local office and have them get this straightened out since the numbskull on the phone claims he could not see the letter, and had no idea on what I was talking about.

Bad IRS customer service representive

As soon as the guy answered the phone he had a attitude. I was trying to explain my issue to him and instead of letting me finish he interrupted me. He said listen to me we can be on the phone a few minutes or we can be on here all day. At that point i didn't fill he would be of much help to me with that tone. I asked him could i speak to someone else and he said no. That is very unprofessional of a customer service person. People like this is the reason the phone lines are always backed up. People that don't know how to talk to people. His ID# 100015****

Too Busy Message and Hung Up On Me

Wow! I recently applied for an FEIN and had a question. I just called the IRS at 1-80*-829-**** and the automated message said the IRS was too busy for my call at this time and instructed me to call back the following business day. The automated message then disconnected the call. Seriously? You are going to tell taxpayers you are too busy to help and hang up on us? Unbelievable. Your service to taxpayers is unacceptable and down right shameful. The IRS inherently has a bad reputation with the public, and treating people like this certainly does not help. It really is a shame. Anarchy?.....just putting it out there.

Waste 2 hours waiting and still got hung up on

First call was 42 minutes waiting, then this guy picks up the phone, starts to say his name, mutes it before coming back for the last couple digits of his employee id. What I did get was 000678142. So I start to explain my question when this MF *** his headset (you can hear it distinctly) and doesn't talk back. I wait an additional 4 minutes telling him I'm still here and he hangs up. I recorded the call (for quality assurance) and had to go to work, wasting almost an hour of my time.

Then, next day, I call back, wait another 37 minutes, and this woman picks up. I say good morning and start to explain the issue, when this B cuts me off and says "Just tell me the reason your calling about your refund". I'm taken aback since I was Fing telling her just that. I told her I have been hung up on, and trying to get more information about something on my return, and speak to a supervisor about the other guy, AND SHE THEN HANGS UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have that recorded as well

Keep in mind, I didn't yell or anything like that. These people when they answer sound dead AF. And of course when you try to call the Complaint line, it's a labyrinth of prompts designed to not get you to a live person. I'm tired of this BS IRS

IRS FICA refund denial for erroneous social security and medicare tax held on student visa

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
While studying in the US on an F-1 visa, social security and medicare taxes upto 3000 dollars were held from my paycheck erroneously. Students on an F-1 visa are exempt from paying this tax. After I realized the same and after years of trying and fresh applications last year, my refund request was denied with the excuse that the statute of 3 years having passed meant that my refund cannot be processed. Let us say that the roles were reversed and I owed them 3000 dollars, they would not care how many years have passed and would extract every penny from me with fines. To summarize, the IRS is an unethical organization and is building that country on revenue generated by unethical means. I guess it is karma for the US that they have a President who games the IRS by exploiting loopholes and pays lesser taxes as a result.

Waited over 40 minutes on hold to be transferred to an agent that claimed there was static on the phone (when there was not) and hung up. Called back to stop auto payment and the woman would not even let me explain and kept talking over me giving me irrelevant info and then hung up. These people are the WORST. Extremely frustrating! !

I phoned asking for help with qualifying therapies for my disabled child using my Health Savings Account. I need a way for our therapist to access my savings fund. (It isn't allowing under the way she is trying to bill me.) I was advised to call a certain number to speak with a live IRS employee, since the IRS.Gov site wasn't helpful and generalized about therapies. I spoke with (after waiting a hour on hold) a very nasty employee "Williams #10022****". He was short with his answer and repeated 4x's for me to go to the web site IRS.Gov, that they had no one live to concerning the tax question. I told him several times, politely that I had read the information on line and that this is how I phones his number. He was rude!!! How can it be that nobody can tell me a code for therapy visits so that I can access MY OWN MONEY I HAVE SAVED for health care. It's not a hand out. It's my money. It should be tax free, as the health account is suppose to be for needed visits.

They won't tell you exactly what's wrong with your refund until it's too late

I'm a student and to receive financial aid it's required to use return transcripts from the IRS to finish the verification process. I've not had a problem in the past, but this year has been different. It all boils down to my dad's tax return, which has been processing, SINCE APRIL. After calling the IRS Numerous times to figure out what is taking so long, keep in mind that deadlines are approaching quickly, there were 3 separate calls made to try to make some progress. 1st call: No one answered. Left on hold and had to hang up because I do have other things that I have to do that don't involve me staying on hold for hours. 2nd call: The representative looked at the account and said that they didn't have the return. Keep in mind that both me and my dad used Turbo Tax to file our taxes, and we each got the confirmation on them being sent. Furthermore, the state accepted his return. But for the federal return, nothing else was told. No other information was given. Just that they didn't have the federal return. Literally the most vague way to inform a person about a problem. If I was that vague in any of my labs/research, I WOULD RECEIVE NO CREDIT. 3rd call *thank you to this representative for actually getting work done*: The representative answered, looked at what I can only assume is was the same **** information, found the return sitting in a dead account realized that there was also a mess up between the company reporting wages, and Informed us that they would try to process it as soon as possible. The 3rd call figured out so much information, but raised so many questions. Why did we have to call and jump through the maze of stupidity and inefficiency that is the IRS to figure out something that I would have THOUGHT would be mailed in. If they didn't receive a return, why didn't they mail a notice? If a customer calls, why are the blatant problems not the first issue to tackle?? Why is it that if you owe something, they'll send out a notice AND bill that tells what you owe IN RECORD TIME, but when you send them something, it takes WEEKS and MONTHS for them to handle it? Bottom line, No one should have to call constantly and be put on hold for hours to figure out what's wrong. I get it, there are many tax payers, but if one is actually ON THE PHONE with you, they should be told about any issues on the account immediately. We shouldn't have to interrogate IRS representatives to get the information desperately needed. Best part? I have one semester to go and may have to delay to spring to finish up *if the return is processed before then* I literally have no Fin Aid, whatsoever because of this. I'm fairly certain I'm not the only student in this predicament either.

History repeats itself

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

First of all, I'd like to extend my appreciation to the gentleman I spoke with last year who told me usage of a PIN number would prevent 2015 from reoccuring. Remind me not to believe much of what IRS reps say. One year ago, I had the most difficulties with taxes I've had, making me realize just how confused, and unorganized outfit the IRS really is. I spent at least six hours on the phone talking to four different agents, who all told me a different story each time. I also received TWO 4883s and a 5071 before my refund finally arrived in October. Not wanting to go through the same garbage I did a year ago, I simply sent my return in and steered clear of all their "services" promoted. I used the PIN number from one of the only two pieces of mail the IRS had sent me this year. I did find it a bit odd the PIN from the letter dated in 1-16 contained a number listed as a 2014 PIN. Just the same, I put it down on my return and mailed it in just before 4-18. Things started looking odd once mid-May passed without my refund arriving. Just like a year ago, May passed with nothing, now here it is early June and I still haven't got it. Much to my delight, I still had to scowl when I came home 6-6 to find a piece of mail from the IRS waiting. Just by looking at the envelope, I could tell it was NOT my refund, causing me to fear a repeat of 2015. Certainly it couldn't happen, using a PIN to file would prevent the complications of a year ago from happening again. Imagine my surprise when I opened the envelope to find another infamous 4883C letter stating "they were unable process my return until they were able to verify my identity".My accountant filled in everything but the PIN and my signature, but they seem to believe my identity was compromised. I work a full time job (I've yet to miss a day) 8-530 M-F, and I do not have the time to *** and wait around for hours to talk to some IRS ***. Tech support, school loan, you name it, dealing with these IRS comics is every bit as bad, if not worse. I'd expect after I call the first time, I'll receive a 5071 saying they still can't verify my identity, and I'll have to call in again, and again, and again. I'd expect another 4883 letter to show up, too. Sorry to tell you *** but I don't have time to deal with this garbage again in 2016. Very disappointing taxpayers are at the mercy of an outfit that's not organized enough to even manage a lemonade stand. I've had to wonder if the IRS doesn't deliberately delay recipients owed large refunds with these tactics as I've been set to receive hearty amounts both years. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the less you have to do with the IRS, the better off you are. I find it rather incredible simply sending in my refund (sorry the figures weren't in my writing) would cause what's likely to be at least a three-month delay to receive it. I'd agree something serious needs to be done with the fools, they're obviously not prepared, or competent to handle all that's on their plate, thus making taxpayers miserable.

I agree. My tax preparer e-filed my return on 3/7 & I have yet to received my refund.

After the first 4 weeks, I contacted the IRS & was told that info was missing & that a inquiry would be filed. I would received a letter notifying me of the problem. On 5-12, after not hearing a peep, I contacted them again, this time a pleasant agent, went over my return & found nothing missing nor amiss. I was told that I would NOT be receiving said letter & that it would be processed as is, my refund would arrive in 4 weeks.

Well, today 6-10, I called again, this time the agent said that info was missing & after once again, explaining what I was told before. She said, that the return would be processed as is. I t would take a additional 22 days. WHAT!

The worse part is, I am disabled & not required to pay Fed. tax & I use this as forced savings.

Not no more.

In 2012 we filed for bankruptcy IRS accepted it and signed off now here is 2016 and the IRS decides they are going to go back and say oh no I am sorry we changed our mind, changed dates and lost returns so that this is in their favor. I have obtained an attorney and now the (I wont call her a lady) DEMON AMY is making life *** for my lawyer who is the best in KC and Amy came to my door demanding she come in and take inventory and start appraising everything. I did not receive any notices or letters and Amy tells me that she does not appreciate the colorful conversations I have had it with the IRS when their no good POS people told me I was going to jail wouldnt listen to a thing i said, talked over me and ignored anything I asked or said and one of the IRS cust service people told me to go {{Redacted}}. WOW!! AWESOME!! Hey AMY, how about you appraise my *** and kiss it while you are there. They think they can turn and twist everything and change dates, lose filed returns and tell me when something was done when it shows on documents in black and white and now Amy "the devil" needs to meet with MY attorney so she can finger fiddle every piece of paper so she thinks she can find a mistake in their favor. Amy (DEMON) also didn't like the fact that I had a lawyer because they thought they were going to bully me in to paying whatever they said. NEWS FLASH THE IRS CAN'T COLLECT ON ANYTHING EXCEPT THE LAST TEN YEARS TO CURRENT. Go pick on AL Sharpton who has owes over 43 million dollars and leave the small guy alone who is trying to make a living and support their family. I guess I should have gotten on welfare and food stamps and kept *** out kids just so I didn't have to go threw this stress. NOOOOO PICK ON THE SMALL BUSINESS OWNER BECAUSE YOU CAN BULLY YOUR WAY AROUND. I DON'T SEE THEM BULLYING ANY WELL KNOWN PEOPLE BECAUSE IRS IS SCARED OF BIG CORPORATIONS AND POWERFUL PEOPLE. IRS WANTS TO *** THE SMALL NOBODY!!! I HATE YOU IRS!! You need to teach A *** manners class in training or new hire orientation.

Women was so rude as I waited over an hour to get through to her. She then told me that it is my fault I didn't receive my full refund as someone else claimed my son before I filed. A common problem when two people try to claim the same child. The first one who files usually will get the kid as a dependent while the one who delays filing or files after will be denied.

Two people cannot claim the same dependent. I suggest you consult your divorce decree if applicable to see who gets the kid, tho since IRS doesn't know what your divorce settlement says, it's still "first come, first served" as they say. Next year file as early as possible and do an e-file for free at TurboTax, TaxAct, etc.

As for IRS service, sorry, but there is none anymore. IRS has been corrupted and is now staffed almost totally with inept but "diverse" employees.
