IRS preparer re-registration is ridiculous!
I am a tax return professional who has been preparing tax returns and e-filing them for 10yrs with no problems. In the past I had to submit to background tests, suitability checks and even fingerprinting!
New rules were introduced for preparers who e-file more than 5 returns. This year they increased the registration process (for both new and re-registering individuals) requesting additional identity info which includes asking for credit card numbers, auto/mortgage loan account numbers, etc. in order to verify one's identity for "security reasons" by matching items in our credit report. I understand the need for security , but for my own personal identity security I do not use credit cards, (have one debit card which does not appear on credit reports), I already paid off my car, and I live with relatives so I do not have a mortgage to pay.
Did I mention I already have previously been fingerprinted and was simply re-registering? All these requirements needed just to prepare tax returns!
Even better, their website for Tax pros has been under maintenance or unavailable at this time or unable to process your request for more than 3 weeks. So I can not file returns without that ID number, yet I can't register to get it!
Reason of review: Order processing issue.
Preferred solution: Let the company propose a solution.
IRS Pros: I have had very good help in the past.
IRS Cons: To being made to feel like my issue does not matter.
